Classic Rig Setup

Hello fine readers,

I’d like to keep these Monday blog posts a bit more informal and not so academicky, so I do not drive myself crazy.

This week I’d like to tell you about what I’m up to music-wise.

I’ve been working on a set of new music with new instruments so I have not been playing electro shows lately. Also, In the meantime while the new electro set is cooking, I’ve been gigging with guitar and singing covers very regularly around the Twin Ports.

Here is a picture of the exact same rig I’ve used since I began performing, which I now refer to as my CLASSIC RIG:

I’ve played about 80 shows in the last four years and the setup has never changed this entire time. However, the repertoire expanded - but not too much within the last year or so.

Well holy smokes, that is more songs than I thought.

I quit programming songs for this rig because I just wanted to try something different and new and which would allow more performance freedom. The performances on the classic rig are basically choreographed and not off the cuff or on the fly at all. When I first began this journey as a weird electronicky artist, I had envisioned more of an improvisational nature to my performances. But that never really happened.

So, I’ve now a few new toys that I am experimenting with which I will perhaps show you in my next blog post!

If you have any hot tips on cool sequencers or would like to convince me to just give the hardware thing up and submit to Ableton, please hassle me in the comments below.

Garageband Changed My Life

When I was in my senior year as a music student at UMD, back in 2006, a friend sent me a recording he made of himself with overdubbed vocals. I was amazed when I found out he recorded it using a thing called Garageband. BUT DON’T I HAVE THAT GARAGEBAND THING ON MY COMPUTER?! is what I thought. And sure enough, I did. My mind was blown by the arsenal of loops and effects that were just a click n drag away from turning a dry old skeleton of an idea into a fully fleshed real live song. Holy holy holy.

Prior to this discovery, I carried around a cassette tape voice recorder and would record song ideas and melodies that I plunked out on the piano down in the dingy practice rooms in the basement of Humanities. Aspiring to be a classical composer like Chopin or Rachmaninoff, I also carried around manuscript paper for musical notation. However, I would soon discover and have to accept that notating music was a rather painstaking process which required the kind of discipline and patience for which I was not suited. Why not just press record, for crying out loud?! Boom. Your idea is there for posterity. Of course, recording ideas onto tape is not sufficient if you want your compositions to be performed by an actual live orchestra, but discovering recording software and loops kinda curbed my desire to create classical music. Why? Well, let me tell you why. 

Garageband is a big reason I began singing. I never sang much at all before then. I was a piano player and that was about it. Like any normal human, I didn't like the sound of my recorded voice, but two tracks of my own voice singing harmony with each other? And sweet lo-fi vocal effects like ‘telephone lines?’ . . . LOVE!!! 

The realization that I could actually make my voice sound decent to me (as in, not like myself) caused me to also start thinking that maybe I could write plain old song-songs with, like, lyrics and stuff, and then sing them myself! ME! Sing! You know, as opposed to writing a notated Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Walking Stick that sits in a book on a shelf never to see the light of day, which is to say, never to actually become sound waves in the air. And the truth was, I had always dreamed of being an anthem-wielding rockstar like Freddie Mercury way more than wanting to be a boring old classical composer but shhhh don't tell anyone. I basically found my ‘voice’ by using a veil (effects and overdubs) to hide behind. Just add some sweet beats to those vocals and voila! I am one happy girl.

So, to sum this whole thing up, Garageband propelled my transition away from the classical world and into what I call the folk world. Like, the human world. Sorry, academics. Yeah, I like to think there are two main genres of music: Folk music, and Academic music. But now I have really opened up a whole can of worms that I'll have to tackle another day. 

For the record, I used fancy-pants Logic now to record instead of Garageband.

Ingeborg's Big Debut As Blogger

Greetings, my little cupcakes!

It’s your old pal Ingeborg here, writing from my magical artist studio in Duluth’s hillside. I will be bringing the Good News to you here on my blog every Monday morning (if not more!) from here to eternity. Which can only mean one thing. I’m gonna have to get my shit together and write some of these posts in advance. Like the pros! Well here I goes.

And what will this Good News be? First, I’m gonna share my processes for making music and artwork. So, you’ll get to see the inside of my studio more often (woo-weee it’s gettin hot in here). Aside from that I’ll be sharing* thoughts I think and stuff that I enjoy, especially things or people you may not have heard of before. Like, for example, my patron saint, Moondog. Actually, that’s a lie — my patron saint is St. Dymphna, but I’ll be sharing both with you eventually. Bob Dylan’s patron saint is fighting with a ghost. Mine is in the kitchen burning toast . . .

Fear not! I won’t be discussing anything that resembles politics in this blog. I don’t plan on addressing that sorta thing until I’m all grown up and living in a castle with my two pet mezubrials named Onyx and Delphine on an undiscovered island on another planet far, far away from anything resembling a Human Being other than my own reflection in the mirror — a mirror that has post-it notes stuck all over it shouting positive affirmations.

Now that we’ve covered what this blog will for sure be about (stuff that I enjoy and want to share) and what it will not be about (politics), I’d love to hear from you on what you’d love to hear from me.
