Sea Smoke

the trees are so patient
to withstand the coming snow*
to wait the next 6 months
til they once again can grow
the morning sun is frozen
as tho it never quite awoke
but through the frosted window
the whispering sea smoke

the roads are a mess
and all is dirty, death and gray
and i'm hoping for some magic
on a day like today
The sun - it gave its cue
And the great lake spoke
Softly with its words
the whispering sea smoke

somewhere there must be
a spell finally being broke
cuz something is fire
Beneath the sea smoke

*started this little song a few years ago in early winter when the sea smoke was abundant

Never Been

I think it’s time to hit the road
been in one place much too long
thought i’d be here just a year
but it’s been a decade strong

I’ve never been to new york
to see a broadway play
never walked in central park
on a Lou Reed Perfect Day

Thought i’d see that big city
at least every now and then
But no, i’ve never made it
No, i’ve never been

I’m gonna drive LA to Maine
And every place in there between
I think it’s time to find out
What I’ve never seen

And i’ll play shows
To empty rooms
to nobody at the bar
Miles and miles of highway
with my keyboard and guitar

Thought i’d be further along
Nearly halfway ’til the end
But no, i’ve never made it
No, i’ve never been

Lilacs

spend the whole winter
awaiting the spring
for the tulips to bloom
for robins to sing
for buds to appear
upon all of the trees
for lilac blossoms
in the breeze

i'm buried in snow
i'm up to my head
i'm frozen solid
i'm practically dead
i'm haunted by ghosts
and bad memories
some get swept away
with the lilac breeze

BRIDGE
I wait all the winter
for rivers to flow
for bees to go buzz
for gardens to grow
and once they've appear
they're gone once again
all lovely things
must come to an end

wait the whole winter
for it to be spring
for tulips to bloom
for robins to sing
here in the north
when the lilacs arrive
it's good to be here
and good to be alive

Maker

in the studio and deep
in the mud
sculpting warriors with
sweat and so much blood

carve a great philosopher
a soldier and a saint
the heavens and earth
with just some ink and paint

getting the tools out
making them sharp
tune the strings up
tune up the harp

rosin up the fiddle bow
dust off the organ keys
there's work here to be done
a thousand melodies

from nearly nothing
but a thought
i take care of
what i got

You Have A Halo

we carried here all our possessions
and staked a claim upon a void
and built a little home from nothing
and watched it nearly be destroyed

And now you have a halo
now you have a crown
you're singing high among the stars now
while i'm singing low here on the ground

Did not know that when there's nothing
there's still something to be lost
Somethings so easily wasted
Are gone at such a cost

But now you have a halo
now you have a crown
you're singing high among the stars now
while i'm singing low here on the ground

In this place where I am living
is the dream you had in mind
i'm hoping you can help me
live the dream you left behind

Cuz now you have a halo
now you have a crown
you're singing high among the stars now
while i'm singing low here on the ground

Bump in the Night

dollhouse in the attic
cobwebs beneath the eaves
phantoms in the shadows
and rosary beads

fingers clutching tight
evil spirits out of sight
praying to a ghost
on a foggy winter night

then a creak and thump
and things that go bump
I'm a trembling soul
See me dance, see me jump
from the things
that go bump

the wind whistles and moans
I hear a lost and starving child
who i should let inside
safe from the cold and wild

but I open up the door
and no one is standing there
just an eerie silence
and a bleakness in the air

then a creak and thump
and things that go bump
I'm a trembling soul
See me dance, see me jump
from the things
that go bump

Ordinary Day

crumples of gift wrap
piled on the floor
is this what we went
through the trouble all for
the party’s moved on
the house is still
and new year is coming
arrive it will

the tree has to come down
the lights be put away
and i have got to live
an ordinary day

the gingerbread house
gets thrown in the trash
christmas it comes
and goes in a flash
for a brief while
there was hope in the air
but there’s no sign of that
left anywhere

the tree has to come down
the lights be put away
and i have got to live
an ordinary day
